David and Janet Sussman’s spectacular townhouse is the setting for a discriminating mix of one of a kind fine quality antiques. Some of the Sussman collection showcases Janet’s family heirlooms such as the cross that was awarded her father by the patriarch of North and South America and archbishop of NYC for his outstanding years of dedicated service to others. Janet is an avid collector of 19th century Italian and French antiques.

Their fifteen year old townhouse had a complete renovation uniting living and dining areas into one extensive open space. As you enter the foyer notice the twelve foot custom etched window cascading light onto the staircase and the clear leaded glass custom transoms designed by Stain Glass Creations of Ashland, Virginia, appear above every doorway adding additional light into each room. Needlepoint rugs by Stark, French crystal chandeliers, antique Limoge, Sheffefield, Dressden, Meissen, Sieve, and Lalique make the Sussman home sumptuous and lush in décor. A striking focal point in the living area is the Arthur Court silver six foot high mirror and companion desk.

The Nancy Thornett designed kitchen features antique magelica ceramics along with some sentimental family pieces. The multilevel decks off the kitchen compliment the island style furniture in tropical hues. Janet and David’s lush garden was designed by Jim Gianaris.

Upstairs the master suite is attractively decorated in a French style with art deco accessories. Janet’s designer, Marlene Weiss, tastefully arranged a Julia Gray bed, custom made dressing table, and French Deco accent pieces. If you have seen Marjorie Merriweather Post’s dressing room at Hillwood, you observe a strong similarity in Janet’s artful display of her collection of shoes and handbags for an evening out. Her “old style Hollywood” bathroom is accented with three French Baccarate chandeliers, collection of antique perfume bottles, and gold lame furniture. In one of the guest rooms local artist Lanie Oxman has several whimsical pieces along with numerous Jay Strongwater picture frames.

In the lower level recreation area real estate investor and musician husband David has his musical and physical workout areas including an original Wurlitzer jukebox and old movie reel posters of Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, and Clint Eastwood. Ralph Lauren paisley wallpaper attractively surrounds Maitland-Smith furniture in the Sussman’s inviting entertainment area. Leave time for touring this town home as the Sussman’s collections are stunning and artfully arranged.
